Locked Room

Yesterday I took a cab from downtown Manhattan to South Brooklyn. We could have shot through the Battery Park tunnel and been at my location in less than 10 minutes, and that's what I thought we were doing until my cab came out of the tunnel still in Manhattan and we pulled onto the Brooklyn Bridge approach. I asked the driver why he didn't go through the tunnel, and he said, "There's no traffic right now. It's longer this way, but it will cost the same since you don't have to pay the tunnel toll." Right. Exactly. So why didn't we go through the tunnel? Then we hit traffic on the bridge and had to sit and stare at each other for about 10 minutes, in one of those locked room situations where everyone knows the other person is an idiot. I felt like I was back in a meeting at my old job.
