My co-worker said the storm surge for the looming hurricane would be worse than normal since there was a full moon, which meant the tides would be higher. I informed her that she was wrong. How much of the sun is being reflected onto the moon has no bearing on tides, it only matters how close the moon is to the Earth. She swore up and down that I was wrong, but I cited my 8th grade Earth Science teacher who used the same logic when I theorized that people acted crazy when the moon was full because it was exerting more gravity on the liquid floating in their skull. I looked it up to prove that I was right a day later, and it turns out that tides are higher and the moon's gravity is stronger during full and new moons since the Earth and moon are in greater alignment. So now I'm looking for my 8th grade teacher on Facebook to write him a nasty note.
