The Auxiliary Waiting Room

I try to be really chipper at the DMV whenever I deal with employees. I figure these people are so used to getting hassled and screamed at all day that maybe they'll make my life easier. It hasn't helped so far. When I took my ticket for help at the DMV the other day, I had 120 and they were on 12. I thought that maybe they were running low and high numbers at the same time, but it turned out that I would be waiting for several hours before getting my license paperwork done. I showed them my number to get into the waiting room, and they actually waved me over to an auxiliary waiting room. This room is for people whose numbers are so far from being called that they don't even have a screen with which number's up. It was the strangest purgatory, sitting in chairs arranged theater-style, but there was nothing to look at except the door. And all you could do was stare at the door and hope the next person who walked in would be telling you to go to the next waiting room. Even if you win, you lose.
