The Phone Bank
A call came into my office asking some abstruse question about our website. No one on the phones could answer it, so it was transferred to our head web developer, a guy who sits right next to me and happens to be from Russia. His English skills are impeccable, but sometimes the subtleties of discourse sail over his head. I heard him take the call, "Hello. No, I'm in the office. I'm right here. I'm happy to try to help you." It became clear to me that this caller thought he'd been routed to some call bank we had setup in the Ukraine, but in fact the caller was speaking with the most senior person; the only person who could help them. I'm not sure who found the episode most embarrassing, but I know I enjoyed the awkwardness enough for ten people.
