The grocery store near my office has a deli counter piled with meats, cheeses, breads, and above it all a sign: "We make sandwiches." I went there last week and stood in line for a moment and then asked, "Do you make sandwiches?" I'd forgotten about the sign. Then I asked what kind of sandwiches, and the man said, "All kinds." I thought about what I'd really like to eat for lunch and then ordered an almond butter and jelly sandwich. The guy shook his head and said, "That's impossible." I can't remember what I ended up getting for lunch that day, but I do remember standing in the middle of a huge grocery store with almond butter and jelly containers stacked all the way to the ceiling and thinking that this guy lacked any imagination.
