Getting up on the bike bell

I try not to get on my bike bell too much while rolling through intersections. I think it turns pedestrians off to the struggles bikers face with motorists. We need the pedestrians on our side in this fight. But if I'm riding home and get behind someone who's going crazy on their bike bell, I'll ride inches behind them coasting through intersections while people clear a path. It's like those rare times you get behind an ambulance or cop car and it seems like everyone is pulling over for you.
