Self Preservation

Every day I ride my bike in the city someone steps off a sidewalk in front of me. We'll make eye contact and have ample time to judge my speed and trajectory, and then they'll hop off the curb to walk right where I'd hit them. But I never hit them, because I'm not a complete idiot. I feel that those people who step in front of me is a great testament to the common good of humans. They know nothing about me, but they assume that I have the decency to turn a little bit to one side and avoid them, or that's how I've chosen to take their gesture. But perhaps they just assume I'm big on self preservation. I should paint my eyes with fake bruises to make me look like I'd recently run into a brick wall and then see how many people jump in front of my bike.
