Declaration Day

The 13 colonies that would eventually become the United States declared independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776. And yet today we celebrate Independence Day on July 4. Why? Because it wasn't until the fourth that the Committee of Five, after some debate over wording, actually adopted the Declaration. That the U.S. Government could draft, argue, and accept such a big move in just two days is certainly a day that's worthy of its own holiday. Don't get me wrong. I love America. Baseball, apple pie (pumpkin pie, too), blue jeans, and most of all, independence. And tonight, in honor of the crew of five who managed to do so much in so few days (and when it was so hot out), I'll find a beverage with a red, white, and blue can and use it to launch some fireworks. And I'm sure at that point I'll find just how swiftly some government agencies still move since fireworks are extremely illegal where I live.
