Bad Things, Good People

The ski shop I worked at had a pair of crutches that would get taken out of the shop's ski rack and loaned to whoever was most recently injured. It was a high risk environment though no one was ever hurt on the job. I found out about them when this one guy I worked with who was always a jerk to me hurt his ankle while skiing. It's tough not to feel a bit vindicated when bad things happen to someone who's a jerk. And I tried very hard to feel sympathy for his minor injury. Perhaps I feared some karmic retribution for taking a small amount of joy in another's discomfort. But, the fact is, that when bad things happen to good people, we find ourselves pondering how unfair the universe can be. So, is it so bad when things work out really bad for someone who's bad?
