Earth Science

The first day of Earth Science in 9th grade was devoted to going over the rules of laboratory safety. Goggles were stretched over our heads, fire-retardant coats were donned, and eye washing stations were primed for action. None of that safety equipment was ever used during our year of class. Perhaps that's why after getting all geared up, we had to listen to Mr. Fedenko talk for about 15 minutes about the proper way to clean up broken glass. In the end, there was only one way to deal with broken lab glass: Back slowly away while calling Mr. Fedenko's name and he would come over with a cut-in-half potato that he would use to gather the shards. To this day whenever I drop a glass or break something, the first thing I think is, "Call Mr. Fedenko and his half potato right now."
