Of all the photos taken since photography was created, 10% of them have been taken in the last year. And if you only consider Facebook, the 140 billion images on that site represent 4% of all the photos in the world. We can assume that with the ubiquity of smart phone cameras and social media, the percentage will only continue to rise. It's unfortunate that so many of the photos are of people's cats. When the history books are written on the dawn of the Internet Age and the mass transfer of information enlightenment, there will have to be a lengthy chapter on cat photos.
