When a character in a book has a long name of indistinct pronunciation, all you have to do is assign your own pronunciation and move forward. It's an internal issue. It might get in the way if you happen to talk to someone about the book, but let's face it, people don't talk about books too often. Names on maps present more of a problem. If you're in a car trying to find a faraway town in a foreign country, you can give your car mates a phonetic pronunciation and ask them to look for signs. But then after your trip people will ask where you've been, and offering these phonetic names makes it sound like you visited Willy Wonka or spent your time at the Jersey Shore in winter and made up a story about taking a distant vacation.
